Owning the NICU product landscape
-
Challenge
Partnered with a global leader in healthcare products, Paige served as the lead design researcher executing a 4-phased, 6-month project to assess the product expansion opportunity across the full NICU feeding journey.
The question centering the initiative was: “What other products, ancillary to our highly regarded syringe pump, does the business need to be investing in to create an ecosystem of products that will support the entire NICU feeding process?”
-
Method
Paige leveraged a 4-phased scope to support the client in articulating how they can become the leading player in NICU feeding:
Phase 1 — Qualitative user research around the NICU feeding journey: Conducted 17 60-minute in-depth interviews with medical professionals engaged in the feeding process for infants in the NICU.
Phase 2 — Business strategy workshop: Brought together cross-functional internal stakeholders to assess where it makes the most sense for the business to consider NICU product expansion.
Phase 3 — Global market sizing research: Conducted secondary research to define the potential of the three top product opportunity areas that emerged from Phase 2, across the international marketplace.
Phase 4 — Cross-functional ideation workshop: Generated hundreds of new product concepts and narrowed these down to a portfolio of 8 potential solutions that would support the client in achieving their goal of becoming a leading and formidable player in NICU feeding.
-
Outcome
The client received:
4 highly visual and data-driven reports supporting each project phase.
A multi-stage, coherent and cohesive product roadmap that enabled the client to rise as a leading and formidable player in NICU feeding.
A business plan to support both quick win and long-term gains in the NICU setting over the next 10 years.
Close coordination with their R&D team post-project to flesh out how the business would deliver each of the solution areas to the market.
